How Organic Latex is Made

Organic latex is made from Havea Brasiliensis trees, also known as rubber trees. These trees initially were found in Brazil, however today rubber trees can also be found in India, Malaysia, Indonesia and parts of West Africa.

The sap collected from rubber trees is used to produce latex that is used in many products including organic latex mattresses.

Latex refers to foam made from the milky sap obtained from rubber trees. This milky sap has been thought to be a protective layer to the trees against fungi while some other theories suggest that the serum is an excretory waste from the trees and yet others suggest that the serum protects the tree against browsing animals since it is poisonous and very bitter. In our case however, when treated, the serum has been found to produce high quality, light-weight latex products.

To harvest the milky sap, thin strips of bark on the rubber trees are cut so that the sap flows out, which is then directed into collecting containers. The collected sap is then put in containers and taken to processing stations. At these stations, the rubber tree sap is concentrated and strained to remove any impurities that could have been collected during the harvest. The strained sap is then placed in a centrifuge with stabilizers where it is spun at high speeds to remove any water. This process increases the rubber content in the latex. At this point, the material is referred to as a concentrate of latex and has a relatively high content of rubber.

The final phase of making organic latex involves whipping the latex concentrate to a mixture that resembles a milkshake using different techniques. The manufacturer, by adding other material ingredients, turns the latex concentrate into a compound depending on the purpose for which it is being made. The concentrate is then poured into a mould. For the purposes of making mattresses, latex is allowed to settle into thin sheets of firm rubber. The thin sheets are then customized to make the mattresses by compressing a number of these thin sheets of organic latex together, which results in a firm and durable mattress.

Organic latex mattresses are one of the best types of mattresses to buy because they are made from natural materials free of chemicals, which provide you with the healthiest sleep possible. Harvesting latex serum from rubber trees does not harm the trees and rubber tree farming is considered a sustainable agriculture, which makes organic latex products environmental friendly as well. Also, it is important to mention that organic latex products are biodegradable and are resistant to bacteria, mold and dust mites. This is what makes organic latex mattresses one of the best choices for health conscious people who care for both their own health and that of the Earth’s.
